Monte San Martino – Saperi & Sapori

Monte San Martino will celebrate its “mela rosa” during the festival Saperi e Sapori della Mela Rosa, beginning November 9th and all day November 10th.  The mela rosa is an apple of small to medium size, somewhat flat, pink where exposed to the sun and yellowish-green elsewhere.   These apples are picked at the end of September and throughout October.  They should be left in a cool room, not refrigerated, and enjoyed from March to May.  When mature, the mela rosa is succulent yet tangy.  Due to this long, slow “hibernation” period, these apples produce a natural sugar called levulose (fructose) which is well-tolerated by diabetics.  Booths in the historical centre of this medieval, perched hill town will be selling not only  mele rosa but also their byproducts:  ravioli, jams, turnovers….etc.  To view the details of this festival, which includes programs and entertainment, please view: www.prolocomontesanmartino.it
